To my adopted Canadian Family,
Many years have passed since Moira and Bruce took me in to their care for a year in 1977. Even though we live Downunder, on the other side of the planet, we have always thought that we have been part of the Chevalier Family. We mourn Bruce’s passing as Moira and my adopted Brothers and Sisters do. A candle burns for you Bruce, under the Southern Cross. We are still coming to see you all in the Fall to share Bruce’s Birthday with you.
Our hearts are with you.

THE LAST TIME WE SAW BRUCE WAS IN THE LATE 1970’S. WE HAD ALL BEEN CLOSE FRIENDS IN SECONDARY SCHOOL ALONG WITH TOM WATT. READING OF BRUCE’S PASSING HAS SHOCKED US AS WE WERE UNAWARE OF HIS ILLNESS. THERE IS AN OLD MOVIE THAT PRESENTS A EULOGY AS PART OF THE PLOT. APPLYING THE EULOGY TO BRUCE . “BRUCE WAS AN OLD PERSONAL FRIEND BUT I DON’T RECALL EVER TELLING HIM THAT. WHILE LIVING MILES APART WE GREW OLD TOGETHER. WE GREW OLD TOGETHER BUT HAD WE LIVED CLOSER TO EACH OTHER AND, IF HE COULD HEAR ME NOW, I WOULD CONGRATULATE HIM FOR BEING A GREATAND GOOD MAN AND THANK HIM FOR BEING OUR FRIEND. THIS IS OUR MEMORY OF BRUCE. OUR CONDOLENCES GO OUT TO THE FAMILY.

Dear Moira and family,
Bruce came to serve on the Board of Family Transition Place when I was there, and I so valued his thoughtful and fundamentally kind lens through which he worked. I will always remember him telling the story of a personal “aha”. He went with his daughter (I’m not sure which one!) to a large department store where she wanted to buy – a watch, I think it was. He stood well away and watched while she was ignored by the salesmen; then he went over and within seconds was being attended to. The difference in the treatment astonished him. That he would engage in the experiment, and reflect on it, and act on it, says so much about him as a person.
My thoughts are with you.

I was shocked and saddened to hear about the loss of Bruce to cancer. He was a Prince of a guy who volunteered for many things around Bolton. We worked together in the last 14 years helping to run a few track and field meets, in particular, the George Wright event at Humberview S.S. Bruce was always the M.C. and he thoroughly enjoyed relating to everybody in his calm, confident manner. Having taught school with his wife Moira and having taught each of their 4 wonderful kids, it was a chance for me to catch up on the latest news right down to the grandchildren. Bruce would even drive to London to volunteer for some events at his son’s school, where Matt is also a principal. That’s the kind guy Bruce was- generous, proud and determined. It won’t be the same without him and I have lost a true friend.
LeRoy Barrington Grey (Jamaica)

Mrs. Chevalier and family,
James Bolton Public School community was privelged to have Bruce volunteer as our master of ceremonies at our annual Track and Field meet. Rolling up in the infamous Red truck, hauling off the heavy generator. We all need, especially children, the sense of tradition and kindness that Bruce embedded. As a piper walked the athletes around the field, Bruce welcomed all the keen children to the track – Bruce looked in his element to be a part of tradition. He is a role model and inspiration for teachers and fathers alike. You sure left a legacy Bruce!

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Chevalier. I was a student at James Bolton while he was principal. In the past month, he was thoughtful enough to write my parents a kind letter when he saw my medical school graduation announcement in the newspaper – about 20 years after I had left the school! He was clearly a dedicated educator at his core.

Jodi Graham ( former James Bolton Student)
To Mrs Chevalier and Family
I am so sorry for your loss. My mom and I scrap book and just the other day I was looking at old school photos and report cards from my James Bolton days in the early 90’s and I was reminiscing about my times there..friends and teachers who made a difference and of course a prinicipal who made a difference too. I was so saddened to hear of Mr Chevalier’s passing. I will always remember him walking the halls of James Bolton with his hands clasped behind his back and a very stern look on his face. Upon approach i would think i had done something wrong and was going to the office for sure but Mr Chevalier would simply pass, smile his big smile and say ” how are you today Miss Graham?” I remember how he made each child feel important whether they had done right or wrong…. there was a lesson he taught and that is how to to be a better person. I believe we are all better people for having known him and I will carry his lessons with me every day. Mr Chevalier left behind a wonderful legacy to cherish for years to come. He was important to all who knew him. I am sorry that he has been taken from us now. But god has gained an angel of integrity and grace. May your memories live in your heart forever as mine of him will live in my heart and the heart of my parents also. Please take comfort in knowing we are all saddened by this very deep loss.
Always in our Thoughts…..

After reading through the list of condolences I’m sorry I wasn’t fortunate enough to meet the Chevalier children.
Like Bruce, my husband John cherished a red pick-up truck. They were both members of Caledon Cruisers and spoke about their trucks when they happened to see each other and on at least one occasion Bruce came to our house to look for some parts for his truck. The occassion that stays in my mind occured after the death of my husband. Bruce and Moira came to my house to have a look and decide if they might be interested in purchasing my husband’s red pick-up truck.
They were such a ‘together’ couple and what impressed me was that they seemed to be such good friends. People had made the same comment of my husband and myself. I will be forever grateful for the time we had together and pray that, with the passing of time, Moira will also forget the grief but clearly remember the gift of their life together. I would see Bruce driving his truck around town and it would always make me smile to remember them.
God Bless and bring Peace

IT HAS BEEN MANY YEARS SINCE I WORKED IN PEEL COUNTY BUT I FONDLY REMEMBER MY MANY CONTACTS WITH BRUCE’ AND MOIRA AS WELL AS THEIR CHILDREN. PLEASE ACCEPT MY SINCERE SYMPATHY AT THIS SAD TIME.
Harold Whitehead
Mr. Chevalier was my principal for only one year – grade 7, and he was also my instrumental music teacher that year. This was during the last year of Ellwood being the senior public school for Bolton and south Albion. (1974-75) He was a great teacher who inspired me to become a professional musician.
And I remember that he always took the time to point out connections to the local community like no other teacher ever did. Perhaps because few, if any other teachers were so passionately connected to the community the way Bruce was. How he found the time for everything, I’ll never know. He also found time to run a summer school for us music kids at the end of that year. The following fall, Humberview Senior Public School opened. Bruce stayed to run Ellwood, but because Humberview didn’t have an instrumental music teacher, he volunteered to come and teach my grade 8 class. So every week, he would leave his warm office to get in his cold car and drive over to Humberview and back. That is what really blew me away. Literally going the extra mile for students who he didn’t have to think about anymore if he didn’t want to.
Another fond memory is our (his) band playing at the opening of the Caledon Town Hall.
In later years I would have fun chatting with him at my dad’s shop when he brought the Sunbeam in to get fixed.
Last year at a Caledon Criusers night, I introduced my teenage son to “my old music teacher”. With a smile, Bruce corrected me, retorting that he was my ‘former music teacher”, not my “OLD music teacher!”
Cheers to a clever caring man who made a difference to so many!
Mary Haslett
Dear Moira and Family,

What a shock! We are on vacation right now in Arizona and just heard of Bruce’s passing. We are truly sorry for your loss. Bruce will be greatly missed by those who had the honour of crossing paths with him. During my career in education, I had the privilege of knowing many great people – none better than Bruce. It certainly was an honour to know him.

Mr. Cheavelier was our principal at Ellwood for two years. We were transferred to Holy Family in 1966. A large field separated both schools. We missed our old pals and quickly figured out that we could meet half way and contiue to play during our lunch breaks. We were told by our principal and Mr. Cheavelier advised his students these meetings were to stop immediately. We were to remain in our own school yards. We continued to meet half way in the field. Mr. Cheavelier corrected the situation by getting in his car, driving into the field, rounding up his students sending them back to Ellwood and telling the Holy Family group to return to their school. That was the end of our lunch time meetings.
Many people have fond memories of Mr. Chevalier, this is ours.
We are sorry for your loss.

Mr Chevalier was my favorite teacher of all time.He was like father to his students at Ellwood Memorial, back when teachers actually cared for their students, staying after school to volunteer teaching music and sports.I remember him driving me to Dr Steins to get stitches in his Sunbeam Alpine waiting until it was done and then driving me home.Ran into him in a music store at Albion Mall and he told me that he would never forget the day Kennedy was shot and me running down the hall, shouting,”The president’s been shot, the president’s been shot”.He left an impact in many students lives and he was a lovely man. What a loss.

We are visiting from our home on Vancouver Island and were very surprised by the news of Bruce’s death. Although we left the Bolton area nearly 30 years ago, we remember all our old friends from those days, it certainly doesn’t seem long since we attended your wedding.
Please accept our deepest sympathy.
Sincerely,
June &Bernard

My deepest condolences to you on the passing of a truly remarkable teacher and ‘gentle man’. So many memories starting from Bruce being a young bachelor teacher who moved next door to my family when he first arrived in Bolton…to him being my grande 8 teacher and principal. Every time, I returned home to Bolton to visit my parents, I would run into him and he always asked about my travels and life abroad telling me he had always thought I was destined for an interesting life. There are not many people who leave a lasting mark but Bruce was one for me.

Many years ago I arrived at a new school as a very young teacher.
Bruce welcomed me to Massey Public School with his big smile and calming voice. Now I am retired and always remember Bruce’s support and kindness. It was an honour and privilege working with Bruce for those years. My condolences to you Moira and your family.

Mr. Chevaliers passing saddens me beyond words. I was 6 years old when my father was paralyzed and both parents away from home and in the hospital for months.
Mr Chevalier used to drive us to school at Massey every morning in that big red truck. I was an ESL student back then with no friends and I remember more than once running into his office and burying my crying face into his tummy-even when he was clearly in a meeting. When I lost my first tooth at school and my sister flushed it down the fountain he gave her a detention for 3 days. He made me feel so safe and I truly remember his kindness still 30 years later. May he rest in peace.

I knew Bruce from our Ryerson days and lately have been trying to find Bruce and re-establish our friendship sadly to late. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. One day in Jan of 1957 much to our surprise we answered the door at our Leamington home and there stood Beau. We ate with my parents we went to a local hockey game and he stayed the nite. Even though we have not seen each other in many years I will miss him,,,Roger White

I grew up across the road from the Chevalier family at 525 Ridelle. Bruce and I attended Briar Hill and Vaughan at the same time but Bruce was two years ahead of me which at the time seemed a significant difference. I admired Bruce a great deal but frankly it was never voiced due to a rather shy countenance.
Bruce’s father was a highly respected member of the local community. Marjorie, (Sissy) was my baby sitter on many occasions and Leo and I drove to work one summer when he was working at the engine division of DeHavilland and I was a student whose father was employed as head of the finance department. My wife and I attended Bruce and Moira’s wedding but thereafter our ways parted and unfortunately never came together again. I dropped in on Leo several times as he still resided in the family home n Ridelle and I was aware that Bruce lived in Bolton but neglected to regain contact. One of my many regrets of a life that took many twists and turns. Recently I came across and old family photo of my sister and I and Bruce taken when he looks to be about five and decided to send it along with a note to an address I got from some source which I now can’t remember. It was thankfully returned to me by present occupants marked deceased on the envelope. I am so pleased to have found this website where I can leave a note of remembrance although it is many years to late. I have no idea if the family will ever be aware of this posting but if they by chance become aware I would like to say that I had great fondness and respect for Bruce and have regrets at delaying contact until it was to late. Should this s reach any member of his family I would delighted send along the photo mentioned.
