Today I lost my mentor. It was difficult growing up with only a mother. Don became my surrogate father. He was able to guide me through my teen years. Mainly by our involvement in our shared faith at Burkholder United Church. We were also involved in the United Church camp (Restall) He became the Youth advisor at Burkholder and we spent a few years with many activities including a weekly dance for teens. My desire to become a teacher stemmed from his support and guidance. When i had to go North to teach (find a teaching position) we remained in contact as best we could. When I marries in 1978, he could not attend but sent a telegram congratulating me. When My son was born in 1985, Don was one of the first ones that I took him to visit. We have shared many things together and when Ahlzeimer’s hit it was a terrible blow to me personally. I send my condolences to Debby & Family who I know are suffering now with his passing. Don, you are home now, and may you rest in peace in God’s loving embrace.
