We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved Joy left us on May 12, 2019 after a brief and courageous battle with cancer.
Joy was the adored and cherished wife of Richard (Rick) Maze, beloved mother of Lesley (Blaine Commandant) and Ian Maze. Loving Grandmother to Dana (Joe Astolfi), Rachel (Justin Galbraith), Kayla and Gary. She was also a very proud “G.G.” to Livia and Leo and Step-Nana to Brooke.
Joy was predeceased by her husband Rick Maze, her parents Sadie & Hugh McVeigh and brother Hugh McVeigh. She is survived by her treasured big sisters Kathleen (Cyril) Corry and Alice (David) Jamison in Northern Ireland. Dearest Sister-in-law of Joan (Peter) in Saskatchewan, Doug (Norma) and Ralph in Ontario.
Much loved Aunt of Alan (Sharon), Stephen (Sandra), Colin (Jackie), Ian (Lorraine), Colin, Cathy (Noel), Martin (Barb), Michelle (Charley), Amanda, Katie (Bryan), Michael (Angela), Martin (Melanie), Elizabeth and Great-Aunt to all of their children.
Joy will be very much missed by the extended families in Northern Ireland, Australia, California and Canada as well as her many friends, at home and abroad.
Joy was a medal-winning racing cyclist as a young woman in her native Northern Ireland. She had a classically-trained contralto voice and studied ballroom dancing as well as Irish dance in her youth. She met Rick, the love of her life, at the age of 20, and married him at 21. They left Belfast to pursue their mutual hopes and dreams wherever they might find them. Joy was outgoing with a contagious laugh and a marvellous sense of humour and consequently made friends wherever she went. She had a strong sense of right and wrong and fair play. Her children and grandchildren can certainly attest to having to toe the line but knowing at the same time, how very loved they all were. Even her children’s spouses and friends were subject to the same expectations and perhaps a niece’s husband on occasion. Joy loved animals and habitually fed and cuddled any stray landing on her doorstep.
Joy lost “her guy”, as she referred to him, in December 2017 and missed him dreadfully over the ensuing 17 months. Our greatest wish and hope for her is that she has now been reunited with her darling Rick.
“How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;”
W.B. Yeats

Lesley and Ian,
Our hearts are deeply saddened by the loss of your Mom. I remember both your parents when I was younger up to my teenage years and walking down Gore Road to visit friends. Everyone knew Richard & Joy Maze’s home. They were a big part of Wildfield and we will miss them. Just know that angels have welcomed your mom with open arms. Rest in Peace Joy.

Our deepest sympathy to you all our dearest cousins across the pond. We can’t find the words to tell you how sorry we are for the loss of Joy, but we feel she would want you all to smile and think fondly of her as we do, so we hope that you will find comfort in this poem…
You can shed tears that she is gone
Or you can smile because she has lived
You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all that she has left
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her
Or you can be full of the love that you shared
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday
You can remember her and only that she is gone
Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
Or you can do what she would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on
All our love
