We were lucky enough to get to know Hillis when he was on top of his game, enjoying his family, his cars, the cottage, the coffee group, Caledon heritage committees, and his collections of BA memorabilia, school bells and glass. Hillis loved to reminisce about earlier days in Caledon and about all the people he met through his insurance business, the cattle breeders’ association and all his community activities, and we enjoyed hearing his stories, which always seemed to have an amusing twist.
Hillis and Willa’s devotion to one another was an inspiration that we will use as a model as the years go by.
We will miss having Hillis in our life but we have plenty of memories to keep him from seeming very far away.
With love and the deepest sympathy for his family,
Sandy and Bill

Dear Willa, Bente and Jim:
Please receive our condolences from Denmark, the country Bente was born in and brought up in. Hillis loved Canada, he loved his family, and surrounded himself by people from all walks of life. He had a great understanding of the importance of being present . He was a successful businessman, but never admitted to it. With pride he showed the fine collection he had gathered of antiques and cars. His collection of bells was impressive. When Bente became part of the Rowland Family, Hillis took a fatherly role, and made no secrets of his fondness of Bente. He made sure that the succession of his Insurance business was turned over to his
son Jim. Hillis followed the progress of Jennifer and Stephanie
with great pride. It is with deep sorrow that we say good-bye to a fine, fine man.
