I feel fortunate to have had Ted as a friend. A forest friend. We met at a Fifth Line party (my first) and soon the conversation turned to chainsaws and firewood. I had done most of my bush work alone – cutting trails on the farm and beyond as well as the never-ending compilation of wood for the winter. I must have been wide-eyed when first beholding Ted’s sparkling saws and other gear! Ever organized and fastidiously tidy, Ted showed me how to approach the woods like a pro, and taught me something just about every time I was with him. How to sharpen a chain properly, how to rip a log, and over time how to continue the hard work even when our bodies are not as strong as they once were. Proper planning and getting help! Good lessons, all.
Your saw may be silent now Ted, but I’ll remember you when I pull mine to life, and continue to hear your voice in the trees.
My thoughts are with you Jutta, and with your family. I’ll see you soon.
