After a courageous battle in her 90th year, surrounded by her family, our incredible Mum has joined her late husband Wally. Predeceased by her brother Charles and sister Victoria.
She will be sorely missed by her children Hugh (Joan), Douglas (Betty), Frances (Gord) and Graeme (Kerrie). Grandchildren Taralyn, Heather, Sean (Krystle), Kyle, Graeme Lee, Kirstie, Sydney and Ryley. Step-grandchildren Nick, Holly and Mackenzie. Great-grandchildren Andrew, Mikey and Gavin. With eternal gratitude to Graeme for looking after Mum for the past nine years.
Mum was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. She graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Home Economics degree in 1944 and interned at Toronto General Hospital. She became a Registered Dietician in 1946. After raising her children, Mum went to work as the Dietician at Kipling Acres and Albion Lodge (homes for the aged). A champion of the elderly who was never too busy to lend a helping hand. After retiring Mum volunteered at Albion Lodge’s tuck shop, as a driver and counsellor for the Cancer Society (Mum was a cancer survivor) and she gladly helped out with her grandchildren. Wilma always wanted her children to be happy.
Mum had many fond memories from her years at St. George’s Golf and Country Club, both as a participant and behind the glass watching her children curl. An excellent cook with the best apple pie, Wilma enjoyed watching her Toronto Blue Jays, Saskatchewan Rough Riders, figure skating but most of all she loved to be with her family.
The family would like to thank her many caregivers and in particular Farhiya, Amina and Liliane.
Mum went about her life quietly helping others. She never sought any recognition. In lieu of flowers and in keeping with our Mother’s character, we ask you simply perform daily acts of kindness.
A private service is being held on April the 19th.

In tears we saw you sinking,
We watched you fade away,
Our hearts were almost broken,
You fought so hard to stay.
But when we saw you sleeping,
So peacefully free from pain,
We could not wish you back
To suffer that again.

Hi Frances…It has been many years since we have been in touch but I wanted to send my condolences for your mom. I remember how kind she was to me when I would come over upset (I think we were in grade 8 at the time) after having an argument at home. The years have gone so fast, I still keep in touch with Lori Dunn and Iona Reynolds. My mom passed away in 2004, dad is 87. I live in Mississauga with my husband and have 3 daughters. Please pass on my prayers to your brothers. I don’t know if they remember me or my sisters. It is always hard losing a parent. It makes us appreciate what we had and have now, Take care and you contact me through my e-mail.

Your Mom was a wonderful, warm, friendly person – I had the privilege of working with her for many years as a volunteer at both Albion Lodge and Wesburn Manor. She was refreshing, and always smiling – I remember so well when one of the family brought her to Casino Rama to meet with the staff and volunteers – man, did she hold court in the dining room! She was so proud of her family and I extend warm thoughts and prayers to you all and hope the many wonderful memories you have will provide peace at this time. Marlene

To the entire McCarrel Family , we are very sorry for the loss of your mother, and grandmother. There is something about losing a mother that is just so difficult. We just know what a wonderful mom she must have been combined with your Dad as you are such a wonderful family. Our sincere sympathy.

I am very sorry for your loss. I had the good fortune to work with your mother at Kipling Acres and Albion Lodge (in the kitchen). She was very kind to me, and gave me many opportunities. She took excellent care of the residents, and she had a very big heart.
I have thought of her often, although I have not seen her for a number of years. I will always remember her as a very kind and gentle soul. You were most fortunate to have her as your mother.
Sincerely, Anne Marie
